The Black Church is the most representative historical monument of Brasov, and it represents the largest Gothic church in Transylvania. Originally, this church was called St. Mary Church and its construction began around 1380 and it was completed in 1477 because in 1421, after a Turkish invasion, a part of this building was destroyed. The present name was received after the fire in 1689, fire that extended in the whole city.
The church has impressive dimensions: The overall length of the building is 89 m of which 31 m are represented by the choir, 42 m by nave and 16 m by the base of the tower. In the tower of this building is the largest bell in Romania, bell that weighs 6.3 tons.
Black Church Organs
If you come to visit this church, you will certainly be very impressed by the beauty of the existing organs.
Buchholz Organ was built in 1839 by Carl August Buchholz. It has four manuals, a pedal, 76 registers of which 63 are sound registers and 3.993 tubes.
Hesse Organ was built by Carl Hesse in 1861 for the Lechinţa Saxon community in northern Transylvania. In 1997 it was restored by the company Stemmer / Zumikon and it is used since then during the religious services and concerts.
Besides the architectural beauty and the organs of the Black Church, you can also admire an impressive collection of 110 carpets.
